Bittergourds Part II

one of the little upsides about working in this job is the stuff i get to read. sometimes they are fairly interesting. for example, this comes hot on the heels of the bittergourd saga from my previous post:

"1 April 2007
The News of the World

A WOMAN whose husband gave up sex 18 years ago in a bid to live forever has been granted a
divorce.

Chinese man Chen Dong, 50, changed his life after he heard that he would live for 1,000 years if he

was a celibate vegetarian.

Since 1989 he has eaten only vegetables and fruit and abstained from sex with his wife Yu Hui.

The divorce was granted last week. Dong now has to pay love-starved Yu 7,500 in compensation.

i guess the wife must have left the whole thing with a bitter taste in her mouth. *ahem*

Men and their Bittergourds

due to my recent lack of exercise, ive taken to having fish soup for lunch evryday. nearly. i still have my regular serving of fat laden, artery clogging roast pork + roast duck rice once a week. or twice depending on my mood and thrice if im feeling like it. but that's not the point here.

the point here is, or close to it, is that i find it great the fish soup sellers are including bitter gourd in the fish soup nowadays. i like bitter gourd. and im sure although it can be an acquired taste for some, it does go well as an ingredient in the soup. bitter gourd yes, bitter cock no.

was in the line for my serving at the fish soup stall when i heard this exchange between the seller and a fairly attractive chinese looking but evidently non-mandarin speaking young lady in the line behind me.

Young Lady: 2 sliced fish soup. with rice. packet.
Stall Seller: You want bitter cock?

i had to hurry myself away before i burst out laughing in front of the both of them.

Perplexed

somethings i do not and i guess will never understand.

1. if a barcode scanner doesnt read a barcode the first time, how does furiously waving the barcode in front of the scanner help?

was at 7-11 buying myself a morning yoghurt drink when i saw the cashier doing the above with the phone bill of the customer in front of me. made me wonder how in the world does that (the frantic waving) help?!

2. why do giant IT companies like to make complex applications for lousy equipment that are both ridiculous to use?

being the only IT savvy enough person in office, i have to help my colleagues with some of their computer problems. today it was installing the printer/scanner and a name card scanner. i spent half a day installing the printer/scanner bcos the software that came with it was too dumb to report an error when it needed to and threw a fatal error when it did not need to. the name card scanner jus kept quiet.

3. why do some pple have to park their car at the entrance of a small road and still refuse to see they are making a nuisance of themselves?

that's pretty self-explanatory. although i will add that the guy gestured to us that he had done no wrong even when we horned the dumbass.

A New Wave

for the techies, i believe, this latest development possibly is the most crucial in the computing world. there is now no need to boot to windows to use an application (e.g. browsers, email client, etc)

http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/news/2007/11/phoenix#

take this, plus a server side client and wat do you get? mega savings for businesses bcos they no longer need to install windows or use windows server software.

there might even come a time when a home might not need to have windows at all. now that home networking is becoming more prevalent, all that is needed is one central server running a server-side OS and clients having nothing more than a barebones system connecting to it.

this is what ive been waiting for all along for years.

Speechless

yesterday was eventful. eventful might even seem insufficient to describe the day. a particular piece of news was shocking enuff to have left me speechless until today.

the Cuban, that i've mentioned in a post every now and then on this blog, has passed away.

that felt alittle surreal to type out.

i would love to write something like an eulogy here but to be honest we were not the closest of frens. we had fun during lessons together, met at the clubs once in awhile, hung out between lessons as well. frens we were, not close pals, not buddies but frens enuff to know his passing is a great loss to evry1 who knew him.

life is too short pple. way too short.
